NIE or Número de Identificación de Extranjero isn an identification number in Spain for foreigners
An NIE or Número de Identificación de Extranjero is an identification number that any foreign person who is buying a property in Spain will need to request before they begin the purchase process.
The NIE number is only for people who are not Spanish citizens. So even if you are from a country within the EU you still need to apply.
Applying for an NIE will not affect your fiscal status in the country where you are a fiscal resident.
How do you apply for an NIE?

Alternatively, you can apply yourself in Spain at your local police station, or you can request an appointment with your local Spanish embassy in the country you reside.
